Most Christians are familiar with and readily quote Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” But many are still unsure what God’s plans and purposes for their lives are.
Evangelist, missionary and author Chris Musgrove says, “God is thinking about you; He has a plan for you, and He has gifted you to carry out that plan. It is your purpose! Until you discover the purpose for your existence, you’re simply existing.” He calls it “drifting” or “aimless” living.
We all long for purpose. We long for fulfillment. However, we often either don’t know or haven’t realized what our purpose, gifting or calling is. Or we know but don’t know how to do it.
Chris can relate. In 1990 at a student outreach program, which he helped plan, God ignited a fire in his heart when he witnessed 400 people give their lives to Christ. A passion for the salvation of students was born and became all he could talk about. God was calling this hometown youth pastor to be a missionary to a group of people generally perceived to be unreachable: teens in the public schools.
“I knew there was something I was supposed to do; I just didn’t know how.” He had no idea how or when to turn his passion into a reality, but what he did know was, “If I trusted Him [God], I was confident that He would bring it to pass when the time was right.”
Chris learned it truly is a process. And it’s a process that involves taking a step of faith even when you don’t know where you’re going or how you’re getting there. It’s being obedient and learning lessons along the way. It’s trusting God and His timing. It’s being faithful to the vision He’s given you and the prophetic words spoken over you.
In 2001, 11 years after the initial vision, Chris and his wife, Terri, finally held their first U.S. in-school assembly at Florida High School. For Chris and FutureNow ministries, it has been a 30-year journey, but one that has proved God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise and purpose. To date, FutureNow ministries have reached 251,000 students within 55 countries with a message of hope for their future.
