As a kid, I didn’t always know what to pray. I heard Jesus was all knowing, all powerful and all loving. So I would pray God’s will would become my will every night. I would also pray for my wife-to-be. Little did I know the seeds I was planting for my future. Little did I know how God would mark my walk with Him with miracle after miracle, proof after proof of His love and sovereignty to keep me walking alongside Him.
My first encounter with the Lord was when I was about eight years old and I watched TBN’s “The 700 Club.” They called out, asking if someone was present with fluid in their knees. I had a Baker’s cyst that was persistent for years and had caused a lot of discomfort. It also impeded my walking and ability to extend my knee. I prayed and believed that moment and it left, never to come back. This first miracle taught me the timeless lesson of trusting and believing. It was that moment that taught me God not only speaks but those who hear and listen can experience the supernatural today.
When I was eighteen, I moved into my first apartment. One month in particular, I had no money for rent. I worked at Harold’s Corral—a cowboy bar. I owed $700 and that was a substantial amount at the time for me. As my shift ended, I was walking to my motorcycle. I noticed it was windy, although laying as if planted on the ground, like a bait trail, was seven $100 bills. Before I had met God as Jehovah-Jireh; here I met Him as Jehovah-Rapha.
These instances trained and prepared me for larger and larger steps with Him. The most significant of which have been in the business sector. While I was working another job, I felt the Lord lead me to begin purchasing aces of land in an area that had been abandoned. This eventually led to an entire enterprise that has provided for my family in ways beyond my wildest dreams. There have been many times in which my trust was tested but whenever I held true, I was rewarded. When He has truly spoken, confirmed by His Word and prophets, we must act.
One example was when I had just begun to plant my first major development. A well’s water turned dirty and burned out the 40,000-turbine running the well. The water turned so dirty it would ruin my irrigation system if I ran it. I had already spent over $100,000 on the irrigation and this particular orchard was in escrow with the most influential presidents in my day job’s industry. Seeking counsel, I hired consultants who told me if I left the pump on, it would burn out, costing $30-40,000. If I pulled it, I could seal the aquifer from pressure and kill my well that, to this point, I had invested over $150,000 into it. Everywhere I looked I could only see loss. Even if I didn’t run it, I would have to use water trucks, which costed me about $6,000 a week.
I was alone in my land, praying away fear and discouragement, when I turned on my radio to listen to some worship music. To my surprise, my screen read “Let it rain” and was only playing the sound of rushing water. I knew this was the Lord so I ignored the consultants and I had the well left on for three days over the weekend, believing God would honor my faith. Sure enough, when the weekend was over, whatever had been polluting the water was gone and it was running clear.
Whether it was healing my discomfort, helping me with rent or saving my business, God has been trustworthy. Still I would not have had the faith to trust Him in a crisis if I had not already learned to trust Him in small moments. What God does for one, He can do for all. Second Chronicles 16:9 (NKJV) says: “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” First Corinthians 3:9 tells us we are co-laborers with Him whose eyes are looking for those who trust Him. Of course, then, “… it is impossible to please God without faith,” as it says in Hebrews 11:6.
Luke 16:10 teaches us that God views those who are trustworthy with a little as those who will be given more. All relationships begin with a seed of trust—faith. We can choose to nurture this or let it fail. That is the truth behind God’s willingness to do the same for others as He does with those who trust. There was nothing inherently special about David, who his own father failed to think to bring before the prophet Samuel. What made God choose Him was His heart. Till your heart to be one where God wants to sow. If He never bores of making the sun rise, He’ll never tire of making dreams come true. {eoa}
