As you look through the New Testament, you’ll see the many healing miracles Jesus performed. The common denominator in these Bible stories is faith. Your faith can make you whole (Matt. 9:29).
Maybe you’ve struggled with whether Jesus still heals today. Or perhaps you have not yet seen the healing you desire, and you’re discouraged. I want to share seven reasons why Jesus is a healing Jesus.
1. Jesus heals because of compassion.
Matthew 14:14 says Jesus saw a great crowd of people in need, was moved with compassion and healed the sick. His compassion was at work whenever He healed people.
2. Jesus heals to show us healing belongs to us.
In Matthew 15, a woman brought her demon-possessed daughter to Jesus. Jesus said, “It is not fair to take children’s bread” (Matt.15:26b)—a reference to healing—”and to throw it to dogs” (Matt. 15:26c)—a reference to the fact she was not Jewish.
The woman replied, “Yes, Lord, yet even dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table” (Matt. 15:27b). She was saying, “Just give me a crumb.”
Jesus said, “Woman, great is your faith” (Matt. 15:28b). Her daughter was made whole. Healing belongs to all who put their faith in Him.
3. Jesus heals to fulfill the prophecy of healing in the atonement.
Isaiah 53:5b says, “by his stripes we are healed.” Healing is part of what Jesus came to secure for us through His death and resurrection.
4. Jesus heals to reveal His Father’s glory.
In Matthew 15:30-31, people brought their sick to Jesus and gave glory to God for the healings that took place. Whenever God does a miracle, it reveals His power, glory and goodness!
5. Jesus heals to prove His mission.
Jesus came to show us God’s love in action and to bring us salvation, healing and deliverance in every area of life. He came to give life more abundantly (John 10:10).
6. Jesus heals to destroy the works of the devil.
First John 3:8 says, “For this purpose the Son of God was revealed, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Sickness is a work of the enemy. But Jesus came to destroy that work.
7. Jesus heals to prove He is the Messiah.
I was in Jos, Nigeria, for an evangelistic meeting. Many in the crowd of 15,000 to 20,000 did not know Jesus, and they needed healing.
I stretched out my hand, prayed and rebuked sickness and disease. Suddenly, a cheer came from the crowd. A young man climbed up on the platform and began to run and jump. Everyone was giving praise to God.
That’s when I learned the young man had never walked a step in 20 years. He received my prayer by faith, and he was healed!
The newspapers carried the story of this miraculous healing on the front page the next morning—”Beggar of Jos Healed.” The next night, 100,000 Nigerians came to hear me preach, and 25,000 of them gave their hearts to the Lord.
We serve a healing Jesus!
Today, you may need healing for a physical sickness. Maybe you need healing in your mind or emotions. Perhaps you are being troubled in your finances, family, marriage or job … and you need a miracle.
We serve a healing Jesus. He’s “the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Heb.13:8b). What He did in the Gospels, He can do today. Healing can begin right now as you release your faith to God, expecting a miracle.
