Francis Chan: Why It’s Important to Realize God Is More Than Loving, Gracious

Many people view God as a loving, gracious being who doesn’t ever get angry or execute justice when people do evil. But that is not the God of the Bible, says author and speaker Francis Chan.

“The world twists everything—they want to believe in a god that’s soft and cuddly and would never harm anyone,” Chan says. “People go, ‘Gosh, God can’t tell me what to do; I have dreams, I have desires.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m pretty sure He can. He refers to Himself as a tempest.'”

God is slow to anger (Ps. 145:8), but that doesn’t mean He never gets angry (see Num. 12:9). God certainly is merciful (just think of Him sending His own Son to die for us), but that doesn’t mean He never executes justice (see Eccl. 3:17).
