2 Timothy 3:13-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
The Bible is such a familiar aspect of our lives that we often overlook it. We take it for granted. Bible verses and biblical scenes are found in our art and pop-culture references. It has become one of the foundational backdrops for human existence.
Scripture itself claims to be breathed from God. Does this mean it is infallible in terms of grammar and the filters of man? That question has been debated since the early church was established. But Scripture itself rarely argues for itself. When it does, it makes the case that it exists to help us.
The breath of God is an aid to human living. It helps us navigate the challenges of life, and it invites us to know better the Creator of all reality.
Scripture helps unveil what is truly in our best interest. God’s breath, after all, is in each of us as well.
And the breath of God does not exist just to make us feel better or to allow us to control our circumstances. It exists in order to invite us to serve one another. We are called to love and care, to engage in every good work—the powerful manifestations of His Spirit through acts of kindness, social justice and the way we relate to one another.
Would we yawn in church during the Scripture reading or glaze over the ancient words if we constantly remembered that this is the most consistent and practical tool God has established for making Himself known? Would we ignore it so casually? Would we fear it more or less?
We all need a little more of the breath of God in our lives. We need His power, His love and His wisdom. He makes Himself available to us in many ways. None of these ways are more available to us than the ever-valuable and constantly accessible words of Scripture.
