Jonathan Cahn, known worldwide as the author of one of the year’s biggest publishing successes with his New York Times bestselling book, The Harbinger II: The Return, has addressed what has happened in America.
We are witnessing events we never thought we would live to see. If 2020 were not momentous enough, 2021 has started out just as ominously. What all we saw take place on Capitol Hill was not only an unprecedented attack on American democracy but a sign of a weakening nation. These are the same signs that preceded the victory of Communism in Czarist Russia and the rise of Nazism in the Weimer Republic of Germany. Those signs include the disappearance of the center, the polarization of culture and the rise of extremism on all sides.
As followers of God, we must condemn and oppose the rise of hatred, lawlessness and violence whether it comes from the left or the right, from the radical fringe or the alt-right fringe.
As believers we are called to be lights to our world. Therefore, we must impact every realm of culture—including the political realm. And we should support that which supports the ways of God, life, morality, religious freedom. But at the same time, there’s a danger of getting caught up in causes that may not be of God or His calling on His people. We must always keep in mind that our kingdom is not of this world, nor are we. And we war not against flesh and blood, but principalities. And the weapons of our warfare are not physical, but of the Spirit.
God can and will use politics. But the political realm is not the answer. It can open the door to the solution, but is not, in itself the answer. America’s problem is not ultimately political, cultural or ideological—America’s problem is spiritual. And the only answer is not a movement, a party or a leader. The only answer is God—and the only agenda is return and revival. Without revival there is no hope.
The year that was, for many, to be the redemption of 2020, has begun ominously. And much has centered on Capitol Hill. At the very start of the New Year, the House of Representatives voted to remove from its rules such words as “mother,” “father,” “son” and “daughter.” The first prayer of the first session of the new congressional year was prayed in the name of Brahma, the god of Hinduism. On Tuesday, the Democrats took control of the government with virtually no hindrance to implementing the most radical agenda in history. And the following day, Capitol Hill became the scene of a nation descending into chaos and lawlessness.
It is important that believers engage in the political realm. But the answers lie ultimately elsewhere. As it was written, thousands of years ago, “Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” It is time now to get on our knees before God to humble ourselves and pray and intercede for America and its future. It is time to stand on the promise given to King Solomon, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.”
