The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) has been renamed as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
“This morning, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history,” the State Department said in a December 3 X post. “Welcome to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said of the name change, “President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace. It’s time our State Department display that.”
The USIP is described as an “independent, nonpartisan institute that supports the Executive Branch in resolving violent conflict abroad,” according to its website.
In March, President Trump conducted mass firings at the USIP as part of an effort to reduce wasteful spending. The effort aligned with an order that commenced a “reduction in the elements of the Federal bureaucracy that the President has determined are unnecessary.” It explained, “Reducing the size of the Federal Government will minimize Government waste and abuse, reduce inflation and promote American freedom and innovation.” Fired employees were notified via email, with one termination notice stating: “Effective March 28, 2025, your employment with us will conclude.”
USIP lawyers soon filed a lawsuit on the matter, writing that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) personnel and “other representatives of Defendants have plundered the offices in an effort to access and gain control of the Institute’s infrastructure, including sensitive computer systems.” A federal judge later blocked the federal government’s efforts with USIP, although an appeals court put the decision on hold.
