President Donald Trump just gave a shocking admission about what the afterlife may hold in store for him.

On his flight to Tel Aviv, Israel, the president held a press gaggle where he was asked if he thought helping to bring peace in the Middle East would help him make it into heaven. This questioned came after the president previously stated that he thought drawing Russia and Ukraine to a close on their war could be one of the good deeds that would allow him to make it to the pearly gates. However, the president does not appear hopeful for what is in store for him.

“I’m being a little cute,” Trump said. “I don’t think there’s anything going to get me in heaven. I really don’t. I think I’m maybe not heaven-bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”

This kind of thinking is both dangerous and heartbreaking because it puts human effort above the free gift of God’s grace. Scripture makes it clear that no amount of worldly success, charitable works or political accomplishments can earn a place in heaven. Salvation is not something we achieve: it is freely given through faith in Jesus Christ, who alone paid the penalty for our sins.

The idea that personal personal merits can get us into heaven is contradictory to the truth that all of us have fallen short of God’s glory, and all of our best efforts are like filthy rags compared to God’s holiness. The whole point of the gospel is that Christ did what we never could do, living and dying in holy perfection, defeating sin itself.

Now is the time to pray for President Trump, that God would draw him to Himself and reveal the certainty of salvation through Christ alone. May those around him—family, friends and faith leaders—have the courage and wisdom to lovingly point him to Jesus.
