A gunman wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah” and another shirt with an Iranian flag design killed two people and wounded 14 others early Sunday in a mass shooting outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden in Austin, Texas.
The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal who arrived in the country in 2006, was fatally shot by responding Austin police officers. He used both a pistol and a rifle in the attack, which the FBI is investigating as a potential act of terrorism due to “indicators” found on the gunman and in his vehicle.
The shooter drove past the bar several times before stopping and shooting a pistol out the window of his SUV at people on a patio and in front of the bar, as reported by the Associated Press.

He then parked, exited with a rifle, and began shooting at people in the area before officers confronted and killed him within about a minute of the first call for help.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis noted the quick response in the heavily patrolled Sixth Street nightlife district, while Mayor Kirk Watson praised officers and rescuers, saying, “They definitely saved lives.”
The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. near the University of Texas, impacting some members of the “Longhorn family,” according to university President Jim Davis.
Our prayers are with all of the victims, their families and everyone affected by this tragedy.
