NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte issued a stark warning about the threat of simultaneous military aggression from China and Russia, stating it could ignite a global conflict. In an interview with the New York Times, Rutte painted a grim picture of what he called a possible “World War nightmare.”

“Let’s not be naïve about this,” Rutte said. “If Xi Jinping would attack Taiwan, he would first make sure that he makes a call to his very junior partner in all of this, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, residing in Moscow and telling him, ‘Hey, I’m going to do this, and I need you to to keep them busy in Europe by attacking NATO territory.’”

Rutte emphasized NATO’s need for military readiness and strategic partnerships, especially in light of Russia’s rapid rearmament. “We have an enormous geopolitical challenge on our hands,” he said. “They are now producing three times as much ammunition in three months as the whole of NATO is doing in a year.” He added that Russia is collaborating with North Korea, China and Iran to sustain its assault on Ukraine.

The remarks drew a sharp response from Russia. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev mocked Rutte on X, saying, “Rutte has clearly gorged on too many of the magic mushrooms beloved by the Dutch,” and added, “He sees collusion between China and Russia over Taiwan, and then a Russian attack on Europe. But he’s right about one thing: he should learn Russian. It might come in handy in a Siberian camp.”

The exchange comes as Russia escalates its attacks on Ukraine, launching 157 drones and multiple missiles, including strikes on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kramatorsk. Civilian casualties were reported, including a woman and a two-year-old child.

Rutte also praised President Donald Trump for his diplomatic efforts. “He is the one who broke the deadlock with Putin,” he said, “a direct dialogue between the American president and the president of the Russian Federation.” However, Rutte acknowledged no peace deal has yet materialized, adding, “That means that in the meantime you have to make sure that Ukraine has what it needs to stay in the fight.”
