First Lady Melania Trump will chair a meeting for the United Nations Security Council on Monday. The move, considered historic, will emphasize education as a means of peace and will be the first time a sitting American first lady presides over the council.

“The first lady is reinventing her role and this marks just another groundbreaking achievement for her,” a source familiar with the matter told Fox News. “It is the first time in history a first lady will address the security council, keeping to her mission of empowering the next generation with education and technology.”

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Michael Waltz similarly told the outlet that it is fitting that the first lady, whom he called a “passionate and tireless advocate for children,” will preside over the “first day of America’s presidency of the Security Council.”

“Her message of helping the helpless through education and technology fits exactly with our mission at the U.N., to achieve meaningful and lasting peace,” he said. “As a green beret and now diplomat, I have seen firsthand that peace prevails where children are taught and not terrorized.”

The role of education on young minds has been a foundational value for the first lady.

Last year, Mrs. Trump unveiled the Fostering the Future Together initiative during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The effort invites nations to support the well-being of children through education, innovation, and technology. In August, she announced a nationwide AI challenge for K-12 students, inviting them to participate in an event to “discover, develop, and expand AI’s potential.”

The Presidential AI Challenge is intended to “unleash their imagination and showcase the spirit of American innovation,” the first lady said at the time.
