The Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted that the attorneys for Gateway Church wanted to use the “ecclesiastical abstention doctrine,” which would have kept the case out of the secular courts because the matter was inherently religious.
The Dallas County judge also denied the request to “dismiss the lawsuit from church elders Tra Willbanks, Kenneth Fambro, Gayland Lawshe and Dane Minor,” as the Telegram noted.
Cindy Clemishire’s attorney, Alex Yaffe stated, “We are grateful the judge followed the law and wasn’t distracted by false narratives peddled by the defense…We will press forward and conduct the discovery the judge has ordered and remain confident in our case.”
The trial for this defamation case is scheduled for the summer of 2026.
