A father-to-be stabbed his pregnant girlfriend and set her on fire because he didn’t want to be a father, according to multiple reports. This week a judge sentenced Eren Toben to 14 years in prison for the murder.
“For him the crime was a solution, he wanted a free, happy life which he had control over,” Judge Regina Alex said of Toben. “He abused Maria’s love for him to lure her into an ambush.”
Last January, 20-year-old Toben lured his eight-months-pregnant girlfriend Maria Peiner into the woods on the outskirts of Berlin before stabbing her. After that, Toben, with the help of his friend Daniel Mueller, set Peiner on fire.
“She was still conscious, it could have been 10, 20, 30 seconds—she was still moving,” the judge said.
Mueller “acted for the sole purpose of taking pleasure in the destruction of another human being’s life,” Alex said.
