The parents of Adam Raine, a teen who died by suicide back in April, discovered that it was his interactions with ChatGPT that led to his death.
As NBC News reported, Adam’s father, Matt said they “…thought we were looking for Snapchat discussions or internet search history or some weird cult…”

However, as it turned out, ChatGPT held the answers to their questions. As it turned out, instead of talking to people, Adam began talking to the chatbot, not about his homework, but rather about suicide. Instead of preventing him from it or blocking and ending the chat, it only encouraged him toward it. Now, Raine’s family is suing OpenAI for wrongful death.
“He would 100% be here but for ChatGPT. I 100% believe that,” said Matt Raine.
In an age with technological increases beyond what anyone has ever seen before, we must be sure that we are not only using these tools properly, but check on others and their physical and mental wellbeing. When we are in pain or sorrow, it is God and our families and friends that can help pull us through. AI is not meant to be used as a substitute for our human connections.
