ChatGPT continues to face scrutiny after a former manager from Yahoo killed his mother and himself after listening to delusional conversations with the chatbot.

According to NDTV, Connecticut resident Stein-Erik Soelberg was led through his conversations with ChatGPT to think that his mother, Suzanne Eberson Adams, was spying on him and going to poison him via a psychedelic drug. Soelberg also began to believe that someone was attempting to assassinate him. As The Wall Street Journal noted, the chatbot told Soelberg that was “…not crazy.”

Soelberg reportedly had a history with mental illness and was living with his mother. Both were found deceased on August 5. It is believed by the medical examiner that Adams was murdered by “blunt injury of head, and the neck was compressed,” while Soelberg died due to a suicide by “sharp force injuries of neck and chest.”

Soelberg had found solace in his conversations with ChatGPT, giving it the pet name, “Bobby.” As NDTV reported, these extensive conversations ignited Soelberg’s paranoia, which led him to also look for “symbols” in receipts for Chinese food that would link his mother and demons together.
