Why You Don’t Have to Tithe 10% to the Church

Author Jonathan Leeman says Christians should not think the Bible tells them they have to tithe 10% of their income. In fact, that is an Old Testament ritual, which has passed away, he says. Rather, Christians are instructed, according to the New Testament, to give “according to their means and generously” (see 2 Cor. 9:6-7).

“I don’t think we can give Christians a particular percentage,” Leeman says. “… [Also,] I think you should prioritize one’s church. … Whatever percentage I have as a Christian, the first of it should go to my church.”
