Sometimes, people are fickle, and they can lead us to believe the lie that God is, too. We can get stuck in a performance mindset, thinking that if we messed up, God will think less of us, says Pastor Steven Furtick. But God is very different from people—He is faithful; He’s the same yesterday, today and forever, no matter what we do.
“Have you ever had a fickle friend—a friend who made plans with you until a better plan came along?” Furtick asked. “… [But] when God called you, He knew exactly what He was getting with the package. … If He accepted you unconditionally, then what sin, what shame, what mistake, what misdirection shall be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus?”
But how often, especially when our plans fall through and life is hard, do we start to doubt God’s love for us? In Jeremiah 29:13, God reminds us we need to seek Him so He can reassure us of the plans He has for us.
“What’s interesting about that is, He said, ‘Seek me,'” Furtick says. “But we don’t like the verse that’s about Him; we like the verse that’s about His plan [verse 11]. Because I’m addicted to my plans, because I am a control freak by nature … Do you trust [God] even when you don’t like the plan?”
