Moses and Yeshua: More Similar Than You Think

I have known for many years what was written in Deuteronomy 18:15 (TLV):

“Adonai your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your midst—from your brothers. To him you must listen.”

The same prophecy is quoted in Acts 3:22:

“Moses said, ‘Adonai your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your brothers. Hear and obey Him in all that He shall say to you.'”

I believe these verses point directly to, and are fulfilled in, Yeshua our Messiah. There are many examples of similarities between Moses and Yeshua. A couple that you may be familiar with are that at both Moses’ birth and Yeshua’s birth, rulers commanded Jewish babies to be killed. Second, both Moses and Yeshua were in Egypt as children.

However, recently, I found another similarity between Moses and Yeshua that really jumped out of the Scriptures in a powerful way.

I say “I found” when, in reality, I was teaching about the plagues upon Egypt (specifically the water being turned into blood) when one of the young ladies in the class brought to my attention that Moses’ first miracle to demonstrate G-D’s power to Pharaoh was turning water into blood.

Exodus 7:17: “This is what Adonai says: ‘By this you will know that I am Adonai. Behold, I will strike the waters that are in the river with the staff that is in my hand, and they will be turned to blood.”

Similarly, Yeshua’s first miracle was to turn water into wine.

John 2:7-9: “Yeshua said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water!’ So they filled them up to the top. Then He said to them, ‘Take some water out, and give it to the headwaiter.’ And they brought it. Now the headwaiter did not know where it had come from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. As the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, he calls the bridegroom.”

While these may seem similar miracles but unrelated, if we look a little deeper into the connection between the two, we will see that they are not similar and unrelated but actually similar and very related. First, we note that both miracles involve the water being miraculously transformed into something dark red. In Exodus, it’s blood. In John, it’s wine. Yes, still similar but not yet connected. However, if we look at Yeshua’s celebration of the Passover Seder, which is the annual commemoration and memorial of the Passover and the Exodus from Egypt, we find that during the meal, Yeshua raises the glass of wine and speaks these words:

Matthew 26:27-28: “And He took a cup; and after giving thanks, He gave to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the removal of sins.'”

It is during the Passover Seder that Yeshua took the cup of wine and turned it (symbolically) into blood.

So we see Moses turning water into blood. Then we see Yeshua turning water into wine. Then we see Yeshua turning wine into blood. And if that isn’t enough to see the prophetic connections, also during the Passover as Yeshua is being crucified, a spear is stabbed into His side and out pours blood and water. The prophetic connection between the water and blood that connects the first Passover experience is clear. First Moses, in order to deliver Israel from the slavery of Egypt, said, “Let my people go.” Second, at Yeshua’s final Passover, Yeshua said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” This truly set us free from the bondage of sin’s slavery.

This is one more of the many similarities between Moses and Yeshua that demonstrate Yeshua is the promised prophet that Deuteronomy told us would come and be like Moses. {eoa}
