As the Catholic Church prepares to elect the next pope, some UFO disclosure advocates are once again hoping for a miracle. Maybe—just maybe—the next pontiff will break centuries of silence and admit the Vatican’s secret knowledge about extraterrestrials.
Not likely.
Steven Bassett, executive director of the Paradigm Research Group and longtime advocate for UFO disclosure, says the Vatican isn’t about to become the Disclosure Department. Washington’s slow, messy drip of UFO revelations—congressional hearings, whistleblower testimonies and Pentagon documents—is where the real action is. Anyone expecting the next pope to dramatically announce “aliens are real” from St. Peter’s Basilica is, frankly, setting themselves up for disappointment.

Still, it’s not like the Vatican has been totally silent on the subject. In 2008, Father José Gabriel Funes, then-director of the Vatican Observatory, told L’Osservatore Romano that believing in extraterrestrials “does not contradict our faith” and that aliens could be “our brothers.” It was a headline-grabbing moment, but predictably, there was no deeper follow-up. No files unsealed. No Vatican X-Files released. Just a soft, comfortable comment with no teeth.
UFO investigator and supernatural phenomena expert L.A. Marzulli, however, has been calling out the deeper layers of this for years. Marzulli doesn’t buy the idea that these so-called visitors are friendly little space cousins. In fact, he says what we’re dealing with is straight-up spiritual warfare masquerading as alien encounters.
Marzulli has warned repeatedly in interviews and his book, Rungs of Disclosure, that what the world calls extraterrestrials are actually “interdimensional beings with a malevolent agenda,” and he believes the Vatican knows far more about this than it lets on. Marzulli has been blunt, when disclosure happens it will be spun to fit into a global religious narrative rather than expose the true nature of the beings involved.
Looking at the Vatican’s long history of slow-walking every major revelation—from the Third Secret of Fatima to its handling of miracles and Marian apparitions—there’s no reason to think the UFO issue will be any different. When it comes to controlling narratives, few institutions on Earth do it better than the Catholic Church.
Here’s the reality check: Even if the new pope is personally curious about the UFO phenomenon, institutional inertia, theological politics and fear of global destabilization would smother any chance of a full-throated, honest disclosure.
