Why Witnessing to the Homosexual Takes a Holy Spirit Approach

One of the greatest deceptions on the planet today is the one that alleges that homosexual behavior is a normal variant of human sexual desire. Yet the very design of male and female bodies renders such an assertion ridiculous, as does the clear and unmistakable witness of Scripture.

Many years ago, a full-page ad purchased by gay activists appeared in USA Today and other publications that claimed that homosexuals were “just as happy and healthy as the rest of us.” Sadly, this was and is “fake news” on steroids.

According to studies by the CDC, APA and homosexual researchers, practicing homosexuals have significantly higher levels (per capita) of substance abuse, domestic violence, mental illness, suicide, rampant promiscuity and infidelity, pederasty, gay-related diseases, depression, a much lower life-expectancy and a host of other dysfunctional issues—even in the most gay-affirming parts of the globe. (For more on this, read my free e-booklet called, Primary Causes of Sexual Identity Confusion).

During over a decade in the gay lifestyle, I saw rampant dysfunction everywhere. Yet highly organized “gay evangelists,” (with help from their PR firm—the liberal media), have been sowing “health and normalcy” claims throughout the culture for much longer than that.

So What Makes Them Gay?

The truth is, those who struggle with same-sex attraction have had their view of both genders set askew in one way or another. This often occurs through a combination of factors that can include: sexual abuse, bullying, an unusually sensitive temperament, failure to emotionally bond with their same-sex parent or parent-figure, enmeshment by a smothering mother-figure, abuse by a violent father-figure, rejection by peers, grooming by predators, pornography, humiliation by or fear of the opposite sex, family-line curses, soul ties and a host of other possible causes.

(See our documentary film, Such Were Some of You for testimonies from over two dozen former homosexuals on the negative effects of such influences, as well as how God brings freedom.)

Ways That Satan Runs Interference

Some homosexuals claim that none of those things happened to them, but such assertions are tantamount to the patient telling the doctor what’s wrong with them. As a former homosexual, what I discovered in my own healing and transformation process was that such factors usually lie hidden beneath memory and awareness.

There is a great deal of pressure from the media, politics, professional guilds, educational and other authorities, (as well as a seriously deviant society), to explore same-sex behavior. In fact, it is now mandatory in most of our school systems to teach children and teenagers—often without parental knowledge or consent—how to perform homosexual acts, as though they were healthy, natural and a suitable way to experience sexual pleasure.

Even worse, our culture regularly enforces the message that anyone who holds to the biblical model for sexual behavior is ignorant, backward and hateful. And who wants to be hateful, or shamed or lose their job because they didn’t support or proclaim such a politically-correct doctrine?

Gay Theology

So-called “gay theologians” have also spread the ridiculous canard that the Bible approves of homosexual behavior and that David and Jonathan and/or Jesus and John were practicing homosexuals. About these and other claims, the Bible says:

“Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them” (Rom. 1:32, NIV).

Other absurd claims include:

—God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because they had been inhospitable to the angels.

—Homosexual behavior is only forbidden if the person isn’t really homosexual.

—The moral laws found in the Old Testament “holiness code” were changed after Christ came.

If you ever become trapped in a discussion on one of these rabbit-trails, a quick way to cut through the fog is to demonstrate that their claim for the text cannot be found:

—In the text themselves.

—In the context of the cited passage.

—In the context of the early church in which they were written.

How Then Should We Approach the Homosexual?

For years, I have tried to explain the various causes and healing processes for homosexuality, which I discuss in a 2-part video that can be found here and here. The same information is also available in a free e-booklet entitled: A Healing Path for the Homosexual-Bisexual—which is an excerpt from my 500-page reference book, The Sexual Healing Reference Edition.

The Bible teaches that we should approach the homosexual, (as well as all unbelievers), with grace and truth.

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col. 4:5-6).

One of the best apologists in this area is Dr. Michael Brown—a Bible scholar who brilliantly navigates the claims and distortions that are believed by most people in the western world. In our 2-part podcast, Dr. Brown provides answers for some of the toughest questions and assertions.

He discusses such questions as:

—Are homosexuals born that way?

—Doesn’t Jesus love me the way I am?

—What does the Bible say about homosexual behavior?

—Can’t I be gay and Christian?

—What harm does it do?

—Jesus never mentioned homosexuality. Doesn’t that mean that it’s okay now?

—Didn’t Jesus overturn the law? Aren’t I now under “grace” for what I do?

—Do homosexuals go to hell?

—Who are you to judge me?

—I’ve tried to change but nothing has worked. If Jesus can transform the homosexual, how is it done?

—Why would God condemn someone for tendencies he/she didn’t ask for and doesn’t want?

One major error often made by Christians is a lack of respect for the homosexual as a person who has been made in the image of God. Let’s correct that mistake.

Listen as Dr. Brown demonstrates the proper way to witness to those who have been entrapped by same-sex desire. For as the Scripture says:

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Pet. 3:15b).
