Ashley King’s spoken word against the pop-music and entertainment industry may have been released in 2012, but her sharp rebuke—artfully mashed up against Christ-exalting messages of hope—are more relevant than ever today.
“Dear Pop Culture” is the YouTube star’s rallying cry condemning the negative examples in pop culture, which she says present the God-made human body as “scum with unreserved humiliation to a world obsessed with over-sexualization.”
Though the poem does not name names, viewers can use their imagination to list a few stars preaching the kind of message to which King refers.
In the end, King declares: “With God on my side, I will stand against the desensitization.”
The seemingly little-known clip has gained a sudden foothold on faith-based video-sharing sites. The poet, who makes no effort to hide her passion to share God’s love, is also the author of the Christian children’s book Dancing Daffodil Daisy.
Is the spoken word overly dramatic, or an all-too-sober analysis of this important cultural issue? Watch and decide:
