The Legend of the Icelandic Pastor Who Appeared to Stop a Lava Flow

As a scientist, I’d advise that if a prolonged lava flow happened to be heading your way, I’d not sit still and pray.

You’re very welcome to any religious inclinations you may have, but unless you’ve got quite a powerful water cannon system set up, explosives that can change the landscape and redirect the flow, or a literally magical method to somehow plug up the erupting volcano in the first place—then praying won’t really do much … unless, of course, you speak to those who witnessed the famous Fire Mass of July 1783 over in Iceland.

Miracles—either genuine acts of a higher supernatural power or religious and/or superstitious anecdotes, depending on your inclinations—have “occurred” all over the world. They range from the personal and medical to the environmental and the astronomical, but I rather shamefully only recently found out that one such miracle involved a volcanic eruption. I’m sure there are more, but for now, the tale of a fairly idiosyncratic priest over in the land of ice and fire simply must be told.
