Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Jonathan Kasdan says Lando Calrissian, one of the most enigmatic characters in the galaxies is pansexual.
Donald Glover plays Calrissian in the Star Wars story, due out next week. Someone who is pansexual is attracted to people regardless of their sex or gender identity. In Solo, that apparently means droids too.
“There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s (portrayal of Lando’s) sexuality.” Kasdan says. “I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity―sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.”
However, reviewers state Calrissian’s sexuality isn’t explored much on-screen, except for a few intimated interactions with a droid.
The droid is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who describes her droid’s relationship with Calrissian to USA Today: “The fact that they can be rude and short with each and they can boss each other around is actually what reveals their love for each other and trust for each other.
“They’re both very independent characters in their own right and yet they’ve chosen to partner with each other. There’s something I think really romantic about that.”
Kasdan says this is canon for the Star Wars franchise.
“I would say yes,” he says. “[Calrissian] doesn’t make any hard and fast rules.”
Star Wars is owned by Disney, which has hinted at several LGBT characters in their recent remakes.
LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast was said to be gay.
