Sources: Santorum to Drop Out, Endorse Tonight

Rick Santorum

According to CNN, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) was set to announce he is suspending his campaign Wednesday evening.

The report also indicated he would be endorsing another candidate for the GOP presidential nomination. CNN cited “two GOP sources.” Independent sources have confirmed to Charisma Caucus the report is accurate, although they were unsure whom he would support.

CNN hinted it could be an endorsement for Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Others have suggested it could be U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

Santorum, the 2012 winner of the Iowa Republican Caucus, finished in 11th place among the leading candidates Monday night. He was polling below 1 percent in New Hampshire, South Carolina and nationally.

His departure from the race would be the third since the conclusion of the first-in-the-nation caucuses. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee dropped out Monday night, while U.S. Sen. Rand Paul suspended his campaign Wednesday morning.

Monday evening, sources close to the campaign suggested he would take a “wait and see” approach to any decision about dropping out.
