As Netflix continues to highlight shows about the worst of the worst, one may ask a simple question: Can even the most violent, demonically used people be saved for the sake of the gospel?
In their show “Monster,” Netflix is now highlighting the story of serial killer Ed Gein, which comes after their seasons showcasing the stories of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Mendez Brothers. The creators of the show, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are focusing on the 1950s killer that was known for committing heinous crimes in Wisconsin. As the Netflix description presents, Gein’s crimes were the inspiration for “multiple classic horror films, including “The Silence of the Lambs,” Psycho” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

Netflix further describes the show about how Gein murdered multiple women, and was “driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother…”
As these true crime shows highlight the very worst of the worst, it makes a person wonder if anyone that dark and twisted truly can change.
The answer?
Yes.
While Netflix is also highlighting the crimes of David Berkowitz in their show “Conversations with a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes,” Berkowitz’s tale has dramatically changed since his killing sprees. Berkowitz gave his life to Christ and has never been the same person again. His story of redemption, while perhaps not told by the mainstream media, is the one that makes the eternal difference.

No matter how vile the crime, how twisted the past, or how deep the darkness, the truth of the gospel stands unchanged: as long as a person still has breath in their lungs, redemption is possible. The same God who reached into the prison cell of David Berkowitz and transformed him from a “Son of Sam” into a son of salvation is still in the business of saving today. What the world writes off as hopeless, God sees as a testimony waiting to be written.
