Paleontologists in the U.K. have identified a new species of marine reptile nicknamed the “Sword Dragon,” offering another fascinating look at the creatures that once filled the earth’s oceans.

The fossil, officially named Xiphodracon goldencapensis, was discovered in 2001 near Dorset’s Gold Cap along the Jurassic Coast. After decades of study, researchers from the University of Manchester confirmed it as a new species of ichthyosaur. This extinct air-breathing reptile lived in the sea during the same period as dinosaurs.
A Wonder From the Deep
According to scientists, the “Sword Dragon” lived roughly 193 to 184 million years ago during what they call the Pliensbachian period. The creature stretched around 10 feet long and likely fed on fish and squid. The fossil is so well preserved that it may still contain traces of its last meal.

As reported by Fox News, university researcher Dean Lomax said the creature’s name comes from its long sword-like snout, xipho from the Greek word for “sword,” and dracon from “dragon,” a nod to ichthyosaurs being referred to as “sea dragons” for centuries.
Filling Gaps in the Fossil Record
Experts believe Xiphodracon is the most complete prehistoric reptile ever found from that period. Its nearly perfect three-dimensional preservation, including a skull with an enormous eye socket, offers rare insight into a critical moment in Earth’s history.
Lomax called the discovery a “missing piece of the ichthyosaur puzzle,” saying it helps researchers better understand how these creatures lived and changed over time.
