A Lost Boy of Sudan Becomes a Presidential Candidate

Bol Gai Deng, at the age of seven, was herding goats and cattle in South Sudan. One evening, as he watched the setting sun, the livestock became restless. Suddenly the sound of hundreds of hoofbeats and gunfire shook the peace of the village. Raiders sponsored by government soldiers began to set the village huts on fire.

As the screams of dying men, women and children filled Bol’s ears, he began to run. It was useless trying to hide from the raiders. Bol was captured and made a prisoner with other children. He was forced to walk miles to the north of Sudan.

Bol lost his freedom and his childhood when he was taken captive by an Arab slave trader. As a slave, he was shackled with iron chains so that he would not run away. Gaining the trust of the slave trader by working hard, he was trusted with more responsibility and didn’t have to wear the chains. He jumped on a train to escape and rode to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

As a homeless boy, he was allowed to go to Catholic school to learn. However, soldiers entered the school with guns to close it down. Once again, Bol ran for his life. This time he traveled 250 miles into Egypt to a refugee camp. As one of the lost boys of Sudan, he was sponsored to come to the United States by the Virginia Council of Churches and gained a college education.

Now wanting to help others in South Sudan, he’s a presidential candidate hoping to help bring freedom and hope to his people. {eoa}
