Not Easily Broken
Not Easily Broken (based on T.D. Jakes’ novel by the same title) presents a realistic view of marriage and the struggles many couples face. When David and Clarice Johnson (Morris Chestnut, Tarji P. Henson) got married, they had high hopes and dreams for their life. But David’s career in baseball came to a sudden stop with an injury. This couple’s dreams of success were shattered.

He owns a small but successful construction business, but Clarice is the true breadwinner as a top real estate agent. They are both caught up in their own lives—Clarice with her career, and David as a little league baseball coach. But an accident proves just how large the holes in their relationship are. Clarice is bitter and blames David. And he is trying to figure out what it really means to be a man, to be a provider and protector to a woman who can provide and protect herself.

Instead of turning to God to work through their problems together, Clarice and David allow others to divide them even more. Clarice allows her mother too much involvement in her marriage; David escapes even more into coaching and then turns to a female friend for the support he does not find at home. David knows he is crossing a line, and Clarice knows she has lost his heart. But before it’s too late they reach out for help.

This movie deals honestly with marriage, expectations and temptations. And although it is realistic, it handles themes discreetly. There are, however, minimal foul language and sensual scenes, so better suited for an older audience. Overall, viewers will be inspired by the message that husbands and wives have to vigilantly guard their relationship with each other and with God in order to make marriage work.
