Netflix is tackling the powerful love story from the Bible and bringing it to life in film.

The new Netflix film, Ruth and Boaz, was produced by Tyler Perry and Devon Franklin, According to Decider.com. This new flick is the first of many Christian-inspired movies that is set to come from the Perry-Franklin team.

Franklin previously stated for Netflix’s Tudum article that, “Ruth and Boaz has been a labor of love, and I’m grateful to finally share this first look with the world. This classic story has held such deep meaning for me and so many others for generations.”

The film differs from Scripture in that it is set in modern times with the movie following Ruth as a singer who grew up in the foster care system and is planning on making it big in the music industry. However, she quits after disliking her producer’s vision. In this modern-day story, Ruth meets Boaz at her new vineyard job picking grapes, overall depicting a much different story than the biblical one we are used to where Ruth follows her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Bethlehem after her husband’s death and finds familial redemption through her connection and marriage to Boaz.

While modern retellings like Netflix’s Ruth and Boaz can offer creative and engaging ways to explore timeless themes, it’s important to remember that these adaptations are not faithful to the original events. By setting the story in contemporary times and altering key details—such as Ruth’s background—the film is ultimately an interpretation rather than a historical account.

For those seeking the true story of Ruth and Boaz, the most reliable source remains the Bible. The Scriptures provide the full context, cultural background and spiritual depth that modern adaptations can’t always capture, ensuring that the lessons of devotion, providence and God’s faithfulness are experienced as they were originally intended.
