I was riddled with doubt and didn’t even believe that God spoke to people today, much less healed the sick. My mother, who has been sick for over 30 years, was desperate and in need of a miracle when I heard a voice in my head say, “Lay hands on her.”
My mother was struck by lightning while on the telephone when she was 18 years old. This horrific experience left her with a litany of medical issues, including chronic migraines that would put her in bed for weeks on end. She was prescribed everything from botox to cigarettes but had little to no hope of ever recovering.
By September 2012 she was on 80 milligrams of oxycodone every four hours along with percocet, dilaudid and fentanyl every single day. These are highly addicting drugs with heavy side effects. She would have seizures, kidney failure and other chronic symptoms that kept her in this desperate place.
I took a mission trip to Honduras where my doubt in the power of God was immediately confronted. I was with a bunch of believers who where praying for the sick and expecting them to actually recover! They where quoting Mark 16:17 and saying believers would “lay hands on the sick and see them fully recover.” I doubted that the verse was even in the Bible until I looked it up and saw the red letters for myself.
I came home from this experience with a story or two to tell, so I went to my mom’s house where I found her crying, shaking and going through withdrawals. She was out of pain meds and couldn’t get any more right away. As she described how bad the situation was, I heard a voice say, “Lay hands on her.”
After arguing with the voice of God I finally replied, “Fine, God; it’s not going to work, but I will do it anyway!” I stood up, prayed for my mom and all her pain drained out of her body. She has been pain-free, pill-free and prescription-free since that moment. She is now a travel nurse and is following her childhood dreams.
If God can heal a woman with a 30-year chronic condition through her unbelieving son, He can use anyone. It’s not about faith for signs and wonders, it’s about faith in the Son who performs wonders. May this story encourage you today to step out and believe that He is the one who works the miracles and He wants to use willing vessels like yourself to do so.
