Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s former chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, met with attorneys last Friday to answer questions under oath related to the Democratic presidential front-runner’s use of a private email server while working for the State Department.
According to Judicial Watch, which is currently suing the State Department over an unfulfilled Freedom of Information Act request, Mills’ attorneys directed her not to answer many questions. Her testimony covered:
- Clinton’s use of emails
- Whether FOIA searches were done of Clinton emails
- Information about the set-up of the Clinton email server
- Mills’ communication with Bryan Pagliano, the staffer who set up Clinton’s server
- Mills’ involvement in prior Clinton email controversies
- The handling of politically sensitive FOIA responses
Mills reportedly stormed out of the interview at one point when questioned last month by the FBI in regard to its ongoing investigation into the matter. The transcript of her deposition has been made public, as required by a federal judge’s order.
Among the revelations included in the deposition, Mills admitted “little thought” had been given to the problems Clinton’s private email server might create if they were forced to turn over her communications under public records law. She repeatedly said, in hindsight, she wished it had been “something we thought about.”
