Fred Hammond: ‘Love Unstoppable’

For 30 years, Fred Hammond has done it all in the gospel music arena. He’s played the music, written the songs, produced the albums and continually broken new ground. As a solo artist he has won multiple Stellar and Dove Awards, and he was awarded his first Grammy in 2006 for Free to Worship.

Hammond’s new album is all about love. Love Unstoppable is a self-explanatory title, he says. God’s love “will come and get us anywhere we are and do whatever it has to do to get us and fill us and … show us He’s our … loving father.”

He believes that the body of Christ sometimes misses it when it comes to love. We have a lot on our plates—prosperity, prophecy, worship, he says—but adds that “there are some very simple, basic things God said” that we as Christians shouldn’t overlook.

Hammond points out that the last commandment Jesus gave wasn’t for us to be holy and righteous and perfect and upright. “He just said, ‘Love each other like I have loved you.’ I just wish I could see a little more [love] these days … that comes in forgiveness, longsuffering and really trying to get an understanding as opposed to being so easily offended.”

This album isn’t a lot different from his other albums, though it is simpler, he says—as evidenced by some sing-along songs of encouragement. “We are coming through a recession, we’re coming through a rough time. People have lost a lot. … I want them to be able to sing something that shows God [is] bigger than the problem and not just equal to the problem.

“When they sing, ‘You are the best thing that ever happened to me,’ I want them to feel that: ‘No matter what I’m going through, Jesus, You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I find no fault in You. I’ve just lost my marriage. … I lost my job. … But You know what Lord? I find no fault in You.’

“At the end of the day that’s the kind of thing that will keep us motivated,” Hammond says.

“Lost in You Again,” Hammond says, is a cry “to make sure that my heart is a God-chaser, and it’s lost in Him, and I continue to say, ‘No matter what I experience or what I go through, I want to be lost in Him.'”

He believes the church needs to be “lost again in Him. And it’s not just a saying and not just walking around spitting Scripture—but a person that’s confident in the fact that God loves me. … I have God and I have what I need.”

Hammond wants the album’s theme of love to be more present in his own life and in fellow believers’ lives. “I want to show as much love and as much forgiveness and as much compassion as I can. … I wish the church and the body of Christ would do that. … We forget that we should show love and compassion, and that’s a major downfall. And the world needs to see that Jesus is love.”
