Are we one step closer to the end?

A Daily Mail report noted that scientists are preparing to update the Doomsday clock tomorrow, Jan. 27, 2026.

Last year, scientists moved the clock to 89 seconds before our “midnight hour” when global destruction would strike, ending life on earth as we know it.

As the outlet reported, the clock was originally created with the intent of trying to track the potential of nuclear war that could happen between America and Russia. Now, scientists believe that it is “inevitable” that the clock is moving toward doomsday.

The Doomsday Clock is updated each year by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists based in Chicago. It was initially started in 1947 with the purpose of “frighten men into rationality,” Eugene Rabinowitch said, as the first editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

While the Doomsday Clock has become a secular symbol of dread, the Word of God gives believers a far more reliable lens for understanding the times. Scripture tells us that the end of the age will be marked by wars and rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, and upheaval across the earth—not so that we would despair, but so that we would discern. Jesus Himself warned His disciples in Matthew 24 that such convulsions would come, yet He also said, “See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass.”

The world may measure its destiny by a man-made clock, but the Bible measures history by God’s sovereign timeline.

So whether scientists declare we are 89 seconds from midnight or 10 seconds from it, our hope and interpretation do not come from a panel of experts, but from the One who “changes times and seasons” and “sets up kings and removes kings” (Dan. 2:21). The Doomsday Clock may inch toward doomsday, but Scripture tells us we inch toward the return of Christ.

The question isn’t how close humanity is to destruction, but how close we are to redemption. The world may see the end as a catastrophe—yet the Bible reveals it as the beginning of the Kingdom that cannot be shaken.
