Recently, 500,000 young people fasted for 30 hours in an effort to experience a small portion of what the world’s poorest children and families experience on a daily basis. During World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine, teens were asked to drink only water and fruit juice and to focus their time on serving the less fortunate by working with food drives, soup kitchens or homeless shelters. The youth were also asked to raise $12 million to help feed the 850 million malnourished citizens of the world, said James Morris of World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization. “Since 1992, [the] 30 Hour Famine has raised more than $80 million, representing countless saved lives,” said Debbie Diederich, national director for the program. “The 30 Hour Famine has a lasting impact, not just on the children receiving food, care and education, but on participants who view their own potential to affect change very differently afterward.”
