Trump Is Fulfilling His Promise to Evangelicals—and Liberals Are Furious About It

President Donald Trump made a historic announcement Monday when he nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Many conservative evangelicals are excited because this nomination is further evidence that Trump is keeping his word. During his campaign, Trump promised to put conservative judges on the Supreme Court bench, and now he’s keeping that promise.

Two weeks ago, MSNBC invited me to speak on its channel about the Supreme Court, which had recently handed down several important cases that conservative Christians supported. For instance, the Supreme Court struck down a California law that required crisis pregnancy centers to advertise abortion to women who wanted to keep their babies. I got the opportunity to speak with a legal scholar on MSNBC about these court decisions.

My appearance on MSNBC happened to take place the same afternoon Justice Kennedy resigned. When I got home and heard the news, I thought, Had he resigned earlier, of course, that’s what we would’ve talked about. To listen to my comments for yourself, watch the video below.

As I mentioned in the interview, the Supreme Court was a huge deal to evangelicals during the presidential campaign. Many evangelicals—and other conservatives—voted for Trump primarily because of the impact this presidency would have on the Supreme Court. Trump promised to put a conservative in the court who would interpret law rather than create it. This is crucial for conservative evangelicals because many of the liberal social laws we see today—legalized abortion and same-sex marriage—were created because liberals couldn’t get Congress to pass them. So instead, they got activist judges to rule the way they wanted.

Sadly, there’s a lot of animosity in our country, and already, there are those who are vehemently opposing Judge Kavanaugh. But truth be told, they would have opposed anybody Trump had nominated.

So how should we respond? We need to pray. I believe these aren’t just political battles; they’re spiritual battles too. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers. So I encourage you to pray. I encourage you to stand in faith. And I encourage you, as you’re able, to contact your own senators and encourage them to vote for Judge Kavanaugh.

I recently gathered some information about the nominated judge. Click here and here if you’re interested in reading Kavanaugh’s resume and some highlights of his career. Kavanaugh’s work is impressive, as is everything he does in the Catholic church—from feeding the poor to being a reader in the church to coaching a girls’ basketball team at the Catholic Youth Organization. And not only is he a good family man, but he’s also a very conservative judge who will interpret the law rather than try to create law as some activist judges do.

Trump said he would nominate conservative judges to the Supreme Court, and Kavanaugh seems like a decisive step in that direction. In light of the research I’ve done, I give my endorsement to Judge Kavanaugh and think he should be confirmed to the Supreme Court. I hope you do too.

Be sure to listen to my Strang Report podcast below to hear more of my thoughts on Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court. If you watch my comments on MSNBC or listen to my podcast, I welcome your feedback!
