When Atheists Try to Stir Up Witches Against You

Angry face

Yeah, I know. What a headline! This may never happen to you, but I got a good laugh this week when some unbeliever—or perhaps someone who has been hurt deeply by the church—launched a miniature Twitter campaign trying to stir up witches against me.

Needless to say, it didn’t work.

The flurry of Twitter posts was a response to an article I wrote last week called Wrestling Wicked Witchcraft—and Winning. In the article, I mentioned how the demonic activity that rises during this season can cause people to experience feelings of oppression, fatigue, strong spiritual warfare against the mind that makes them feel like quitting, and even physical manifestations for which doctors can’t find a reason.

You Empower What You Worship

This unbeliever accused me of accusing witches of cursing me. I never suggested witches were cursing me. The point of the article is that the spiritual climate in a region is affected by the spiritual activity in a region. Of course, we know that “the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14).

Let me explain. Have you ever been in a church service where everyone was hungry for God and worshipping Him with all their heart, mind, soul and strength? The presence of God so fills the sanctuary that some start weeping. Perhaps others lay on their face on the floor. Still others just hold up their hands in awe and continue praising His name.

I was at Rodney Howard-Browne’s The River at Tampa Bay Church this past weekend and that was exactly the scene. The worship shifted the spiritual atmosphere and with so many believers on one accord, the King of Glory, the Lord strong and mighty, manifested His presence in a special way.

By contrast, when people are worshipping Satan, engaging in false Mary worship or pressing into occult practices of any type it affects the spiritual climate in a city. You empower what you worship—but ultimately witchcraft or Jezebel or gambling or lust or divorce or fear are not the principalities over your city. Jesus, the King of kings, Lord of lords and the Prince of Peace is the principality over your city. He is ruler. Still, principalities and powers do affect the spiritual atmosphere when they are allowed to freely operate.

A Curse Causeless Shall Not Come

I write about spiritual witchcraft each year to alert people of the spiritual conditions, not so they can dread or fear but so they can resist and overcome. It’s not about any witch cursing anybody, it’s about a spiritual sensitivity to the atmosphere that born-again, Spirit-filled believers have.

When demonic activity is rising in a city, a sensitive Christian will discern it. Unless you know what is operating, you will think the imaginations against your mind are you, or the fatigue is natural because you get up so early, or the feelings of giving up are legitimate because of the long trial you’ve endured. The Word of God says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hos. 4:6). I’ve discovered again and again that when I share the revelation on spiritual climates, this truth sets people free to submit themselves to God and resist the devil so he’ll flee.

In Ephesians 6:12, Paul makes it clear that we’re not wrestling against flesh and blood, but “against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Our battle is not against witches, pagans, Wiccans or heathens who practice one form of witchcraft or another. Our battle is against unseen spirits.

We bless witches, pagans, Wiccans, heathens, Muslims, Mormons and everybody else—and we’re not fearful of witchcraft or curses. Proverbs 26:2 (NLT) says, “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.” The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in me (see Rom. 8:11). Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world (see 1 John 4:4). I have been freed to worship God without fear of curses or atheists who try to stir up witches against me (see John 8:36). And so have you! Amen.
