Dr. Steve Greene’s, 5 Things I Heard Last Week – August 31th 2020

The 5 Things I Heard Last Week Newsletter includes interesting things Dr. Greene has read, stories from recent podcasts, and/or links to various resources and clickable content.

1. I heard a powerful story about how the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote (Women’s Suffrage). It was finally ratified on August 28, 1920. The 19th Amendment was passed on June 14, 1919.  The amendment was then sent to the States for ratification.

Southern states were adamantly opposed to the amendment.  7 southern states had already rejected the amendment before the vote was held in Tennessee on August 18, 1920.  It didn’t look good for the amendment as legislators had split their votes 48-48.  The final decision rested in the hands of a 23-year-old representative Harry T. Burn to cast the deciding vote.

Burns opposed the amendment but his mother convinced him to approve it.  A history channel story reported Mrs. Burn wrote to her son, “Don’t forget to be a good boy and vote for ratification.”  Burns had his mother’s note in his suit coat pocket when he voted “yes.”

With Burn’s vote, the 19th Amendment was fully ratified. To read more about this story click here.

2. I heard this quote from Dexter Lyon–

“Love is not without choices.  Once love becomes mandatory, it is no longer love.  It is slavery and God doesn’t want slaves.”

God so loved, that he gave.

Jesus set us free from any chain that binds.  God loves us so much, He lets us decide if we wish to love Him in return.

They will know us by our love.

3. I have the privilege every week to speak with people who are in the early stages of launching a book writing experience.  I can often hear the fire embers burning through our telephone call.

Last week I heard from a quality non-fiction writer.   She wakes up early every morning and writes 3,000 words before 10 am.

I share an aphorism with every would-be-writer that clarifies the rule every productive writer knows, “writers, write.”  It’s not a hobby.  Writing is a lifestyle.

Most writers report their mornings aren’t complete without writing sessions.

4. Former ABC news anchor and host of The View, Paula Feris, asked me a penetrating question this week, “Is the Word of God the highest standard in your life?”

It’s a question worthy of asking in the early hours of every morning. Here’s a link to my interview with Paula about her recently released book, Called OutShe gave up 2 dream jobs to follow God’s call.

5. I heard a new worship song that I can’t stop hearing. Here`s the link to “Wild Heart” by Kim Walker-Smith on YouTube
