What exactly is China doing in space?
A newly released U.S. military image is raising questions about China’s mysterious Shenlong spaceplane and what the country may be developing beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
According to Space.com, the Defense Intelligence Agency released a photograph of the secretive spacecraft, captured in 2024 by Vantor’s WorldView 3 satellite from about 56 miles away.
The image shows Shenlong connected to another object with extended solar panels. Its payload bay doors also appear to be open.
However, the spacecraft’s purpose and activities remain largely unknown.
China has maintained that the program is intended to advance reusable spacecraft technology for peaceful purposes. Yet, some of Shenlong’s activities have caught the attention of American space surveillance experts.
In June, LeoLabs detected an unidentified object near the spacecraft and later determined with high confidence that Shenlong had released it.

As Ars Technica reported, tracking data also suggest Shenlong has released and recaptured smaller objects during its latest mission.
While there is no evidence confirming that Shenlong is carrying weapons, its mysterious activities are adding to concerns about what a future conflict between world powers could look like.
As China and the United States continue expanding their presence beyond Earth’s atmosphere, the latest revelation raises a troubling possibility: The next major global conflict may not be limited to land, sea or air.
It could extend into space itself.
