Hundreds of hours went into creating two of the most important objects viewers will see in The Chosen: the cross and the crown of thorns.

Now, new behind-the-scenes footage gives fans a glimpse of how much thought went into bringing these powerful biblical images to the screen.

In a social media post, The Chosen revealed a closer look at the craftsmanship behind the props, writing, “Hundreds of hours of craftsmanship went into creating the cross and the crown of thorns. Here’s just a glimpse.”

But one of the most fascinating details involves the crown worn by Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus.

The footage shows how the production team had to think beyond simply making the crown appear historically convincing. The crown also had to work practically during filming, including accommodating a lavalier microphone used to capture Roumie’s audio.

The craftsmen also explain that some of the thorns are made of rubber, an important safety consideration for Roumie, as he portrays Christ’s brutal sufferingbefore the crucifixion.

“It’s been quite a process,” a prop maker explained in the social media video. “We had to consider lots of things in building it…they need something they can hide the mic in…there’s also a rig in it that we can pump some blood out through it. So when they put it on that you can see some blood come down.”

These small production details offer a remarkable look at what it takes to recreate one of Scripture’s most sobering moments.

Matthew 27:29 says the Roman soldiers “twisted together a crown of thorns” and placed it on Jesus’ head before mocking Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

The crown of thorns ultimately is far more than a prop or historical artifact. It represents the humiliation and suffering Jesus willingly endured on His way to the cross for the shedding of His blood for our sins to be atoned for. What may look like just a small prop is actually a part of a much bigger story of how the Savior came to save the sinner.
