Former CNN host Chris Cuomo suggested that Christians want to “kill people” in a discussion surrounding the botched execution of Christa Pike.
“I’ve always found it interesting that the more Christian a culture is, the more they wanna kill people,” Cuomo told Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN). “And that is certainly the case in Tennessee. The governor is now worried because this looks bad, cuz it was ineffective. But you can kill her a much easier way if you want. But are we having the right to debate, the right debate here about like, how do you do it? Is that really the right debate?”
“Or is it whether, you know, for you, if you’re looking at it for Christians, you really think God wants you to have the determination of who lives and who dies? Is that what the best instruction is for our society?” he asked.

“Is 30 years….is 30 years justice? Is it the same person that committed the crime?” Burchett responded. He went on to explain that he knew the last man that was executed.
“But I think under some circumstances, heinous crimes, crimes against children, murder, rape of a child, I think it’s very acceptable,” the lawmaker explained. “But I don’t think 30 years is justice. I think you cause the families to suffer, the innocent families of the victim. And too many times we forget about the victim and the suffering that they occurred.”
“And two, here’s what’s going to happen, Chris. You watch,” he added. “They’re going to come back and say this failed execution caused her to have a mental blockage or some sort of mental issue.”
The Tennessee Department of Correction issued a statement on the matter following pushback from the injection’s failure. “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office,” the statement said. “The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening. Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility.”
