The ground may not be shaking in the United States right now, but one geophysicist is warning that Americans should be paying attention to what is unfolding beneath the Atlantic.
Two powerful earthquakes rocked the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Oct. 13, and geophysicist Stefan Burns believes they could be the latest pieces in a much larger seismic puzzle.
According to the Daily Mail, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Africa and South America at 8:23 a.m. Eastern Time. Less than seven hours earlier, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck roughly 50 miles away.
Burns told the Daily Mail that the double earthquake could be part of a seismic “chain reaction” unfolding across interconnected tectonic plates.

“If there is going to be fallout close to land, it would be like something big happening in North America,” Burns said.
And this isn’t the first seismic activity to catch his attention.
Powerful earthquakes have already struck Colombia, Venezuela and Panama this year. Burns believes that progression shows seismic stress moving through the region, creating what he called a “knock-on effect” between the Caribbean, South American and African plates.
His concern now? North America could be next.
Burns pointed specifically to California’s vulnerable fault systems after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on Oct. 9. He told the Daily Mail the Panama quake was “exactly” what recent seismic trends had been showing, arguing that the pattern appeared to be pushing north toward Mexico and the United States.
Burns has also drawn attention for previous earthquake forecasts. The Daily Mail reported that he warned in June about a possible major earthquake in Colombia. Nearly two months later, a reported magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar.
For believers watching the shaking happening across the nations, Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:7 are difficult to ignore: “And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.”
When the earth itself starts groaning, perhaps the appropriate response isn’t panic.
It’s to pay attention.
