Throughout America’s modern history, few figures have embodied both strength and contradiction like former Vice President Dick Cheney. Now, in the wake of his death, the question we should be asking is: What was his relationship like with God?

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1941 and raised in Wyoming, Cheney grew up in the Methodist church. The denomination’s values of duty, discipline and moral responsibility shaped the young man who would one day wield global authority as Secretary of Defense and later as Vice President under George W. Bush. According to his official biography from Brigham Young University, Cheney remains affiliated with the United Methodist Church, though he has spoken sparingly about his personal relationship with God.

In contrast, his presidential partner was known for an outspoken faith. As Stephen Mansfield reported for Charisma, George W. Bush experienced a personal encounter with God that became central to his presidency and his moral compass, stating, “Whatever else George W. Bush is remembered for, his attempt to apply faith to presidential leadership will form a major part of his legacy.” Yet Cheney—reserved and analytical—seemed to lead from a place of strategy rather than spirituality. His silence on matters of faith left many wondering: Was he a man of quiet belief or of political calculation?

Those questions came to the surface during some of the nation’s most turbulent years. After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Cheney became a driving force behind America’s military response and the controversial use of “enhanced interrogation” tactics. While his defenders hailed him as a patriot protecting the nation, faith leaders and theologians challenged the moral cost. One America Magazine editorial declared that Cheney’s justification of such measures reflected a “flawed moral compass,” warning that fear and vengeance can never substitute for divine justice.

Even among social conservatives, his standing was complex. As GetReligion observed, many “values voters” struggled to reconcile their admiration for his leadership with his public support for his daughter Mary, who is openly gay. This agreement is directly contradictory to Scripture and the Christian faith.

Dick Cheney’s life reminds us that no level of authority exempts a person from divine accountability. Power may shape history, but only faith in Christ can shape eternity.
