Police have apprehended a suspect in the assassination of conservative activist and Christian leader Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down on the campus of Utah Valley University earlier this week, Fox News reported.
Kirk, 31, was a husband and father of two. He was participating in a debate with students on Wednesday afternoon under a tent on campus when a single shot rang out. Video from the scene shows Kirk struck in the neck before collapsing from his chair. Witnesses screamed and scrambled for cover as the chaos unfolded. He was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

Kirk had been invited to speak by the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA, the national conservative student group he founded.
The Shooting
Authorities said the fatal shot came from nearly 200 yards away, fired from a rooftop perch atop the Losee Center building. FBI investigators later recovered a “high-powered, bolt-action rifle” along what they believe was the suspect’s escape route. Forensic teams also collected a palm print, footprint and forearm imprint from the area.

Surveillance footage obtained from a nearby home appeared to show a figure dressed in black fleeing through backyards after the shooting. Earlier this week, the FBI released photos of a man in dark clothing they had labeled a “person of interest.”

President Donald Trump confirmed on Fox News this morning that police have the alleged assassin in custody.

“I think with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody,” Trump said. He added, “I think we’re in great shape.”
Trump also revealed how the breakthrough came: “Essentially somebody that was very close to him turned him in.”
