Since the death of Ozzy Osbourne, one of the questions people are asking is whether or not he believed in God. He claimed to be a Christian, but also surrounded himself with Satanic imagery. How Osbourne truly felt about God just may be contained in none other than some of Black Sabbath’s iconic lyrics.
The song “After Forever” from 1971 is all about the questioning and consideration if God is real. Specifically, the song dives into the possibility as Jesus as God.
The first verse of the song begins with the question: “Have you ever thought about your soul. / Can it be saved?”

It continues with the curiosity about what happens when you die and “Is Christ just a name that you read in the book when you were in school?”

These inquisitive words are filled with worries and fears about whether or not there is a God, how others might react when they realize you believe in Him and what the appropriate reaction is when considering death. It even talks about the crucifixion of Christ.
I think it was true that people like you that crucified Christ. / I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced. / Will you be so sure when your day is near. / Say you don’t believe? / You had the chance, but you turned it down. / Now you can’t retrieve.
The song does an even does a deeper take, speaking about God as a Savior: “He is the one, the only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate.”
This song clearly shows that Osbourne was concerned about the eternal, even if he was not sure exactly what to believe. In an article by Robert Clifton Robinson, he notes that Osbourne previously told Rolling stone “I’ve always believed there’s a God. I don’t worship the devil, I never have.” He also notes that Osbourne admitted himself to have “done some terrible things,” with the hope that “God can forgive me.”
Osbourne further acknowledged that he believed in a judgment and that he was “not sure if I deserve heaven.”

Ozzy Osbourne’s lyrics and interviews reveal a man who wrestled deeply with spiritual matters—especially the reality of sin, judgment, and the person of Jesus Christ. His words betray a conscience that was not numb to spiritual truth but troubled by it—a soul that feared standing before a holy God with unresolved guilt.
However, despite these glimpses of conviction and curiosity, it remains uncertain whether Osbourne ever surrendered fully to Christ. In the end, only God knows the condition of his heart, but what is clear is that Ozzy Osbourne feared being a sinner before a righteous God—and that fear may have haunted him more than his public persona ever revealed.
