Understanding Your Prophetic DNA

DNA strand

In the late 1800s, Swiss scientists stumbled on a very peculiar substance in the pus of discarded surgical bandages. This substance, made up of sugar, phosphate and nucleic acid, was later determined to be what we now know as DNA.

Essentially, DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that carries the genetic instructions used in the development and function of all known living organisms. Simply put, DNA determines the characteristics and functionality of every creature.

Just as every human being has a physical DNA that determines his or her function, every believer has a spiritual DNA that determines our function. The Bible says this: “For you have been born again, not from perishable seed, but imperishable, through the word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Pet. 1:23). Jesus told us in the Gospels that we must be “born again” in order to enter the kingdom of God. (John 3:3) What does this expression (being born again) really mean?

The word for born is the Greek word gennaō, which means: to be born, begotten or engendered. It is where we get the English word “genes.” A gene is a unit of heredity, transferred form a parent to their offspring. The moment we were born again (i.e. came to faith in Jesus) we became carriers of God’s genetic code. His DNA lives inside us!

To be born of God means to take on the nature, function and character of Jesus!

The Bible tells us in Hebrews 1 that God spoke in times past by the prophets. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son (Heb. 1:1-2). This means Christ was the last oracle through which God revealed the mystery of His will.

In Christ, we have received the full and complete counsel of God’s Word. Jesus is the Word of God personified. If Jesus lives in us by the Holy Spirit, then that means that the prophetic Word of God dwells within.

I want you to take a moment and think about the implications of that last statement. The Scriptures declare, “Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away. Look, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17). The term “new creature” is the Greek compound word kainos-ktisis, which means: a creature of a new kind, unprecedented and unheard of.

Through Jesus, God literally brought a creature into being that never existed before. We are new creations with a supernatural nature. As in all geneses, the thing created takes on the nature of its Creator. In this case, we have received the prophetic nature of Jesus inside our very being.

Through this prophetic nature, we have the capacity and ability to call things into being. Later, we will talk about the importance of prophetic decrees, but for now, I want to emphasize the amazing nature that we have received. Every time we speak or pray from this divine nature within us, we are indeed speaking and praying prophetically.

Simply put, you were born to prophesy! Remember, you don’t need a title or position in the church to prophesy. You can release prophecy in your prayer closet. The moment you gave your life to Christ you were made a partaker of the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.

At one point, my wife and I were experiencing severe spiritual and physical stagnation in our personal lives and ministry. You must learn to identify when you are under a spiritual attack. One day, my wife asked if we could pray together. Honestly, I was so annoyed by the trial we were enduring that I didn’t even have a desire to pray, which was a sign in itself that we were under severe spiritual oppression.

Reluctantly, I consented to pray. As my wife and I were coming into agreement, she saw in the spirit realm that there was a spider’s web hovering over our house. In the net were all of the things that we believed God for including cars, finances and other resources. When she divulged this vision to me, I began to prophesy to the situation and command the enemy to loose his stranglehold on our blessings. There was an immediate release in the spirit realm.

Shortly after this, everything we saw in that “spider’s web” began to materialize in our lives. Hallelujah! What would have happened if my wife and I continued to go on without addressing this spiritual opposition? What would the outcome have been, if we kept “waiting on God” to do something rather than prophesy to our problems? The Hebrew word for “prophesy” is naba’ (na-va) which, means: to bring forth under the influence of divine spirit. It literally means to speak with divine emotion. When was the last time you thought of prophecy this way?
