Revealing Jesus in the Covenants

In order to understand the story of the Bible and God working in your life, it is imperative that we understand the concept of a biblical covenant. The reason for this is because God relates to us through covenants and the Bible is a book about a covenant — a blood covenant.

God has given His Word to us in the Book of books — the Bible. As you know, the two divisions in the Bible are referred to as testaments, which the word testament comes from a Latin word, testamentum. The more precise word for these two divisions, however, is covenant. The Bible, therefore, is really the story of an older covenant and a newer covenant.

In the Bible, the word covenant means a binding agreement between two parties. The word actually means to “cut covenant.” By definition, it is an agreement to cut a covenant by the shedding of blood and walking between pieces of flesh (see Gen. 15). The two divisions in the Bible are about an old blood covenant and a new blood covenant. The blood covenant is the “master theme” of the Bible. We will learn more about the blood covenant in our next podcast episode, so be sure to listen for that this week.

In this podcast, we are going to learn how God progressively revealed His covenant to Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, King David, the prophets and, ultimately, through Jesus.

The particular kind of covenant God made is a blood covenant. God committed Himself to us by making a literal, unconditional, everlasting, sacred blood covenant with Himself for us. From a Christian view, we understand that God’s covenant was planned by the Father, to be implemented by the Son and applied to our lives personally by the Holy Spirit.

The writer of Hebrews refers to this covenant as an everlasting blood covenant:

“Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Heb. 13:20-21).
