The failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 ignited a firestorm of conversation on prophetic signs and symbols over Trump’s political rise. As I discussed in my book “God and Donald Trump,” many across the prophetic community such as Kim Clement, Chuck Pierce and Lance Wallnau foresaw the rise of Trump and the divine protection extended over him from before the 2016 election season.

This week I sat down with Bishop Joseph Mattera, founder of Christ Covenant Coalition, to help us understand what God is doing and saying in these chaotic times. Here are three signs and symbols that might reveal where and how God is moving.

1. American flag shaped like an angel. It is an awful tragedy that Pennsylvania firefighter Corey Comperatore lost his life bravely protecting his wife and daughter. Many people attending the rally reported seeing an American flag that appeared to be shaped as if it were draped over an angel. Even before the assassination attempt, people were saying it was God’s presence at the event, and that His hand was over the event and everyone in attendance, keeping them safe from harm.

“God does things symbolically, and it almost looked like a sign that God was protecting them,” Mattera says.

2. Trump shows strength getting up after the attack. We do not make any comparison between a political figure and the risen Christ Jesus, our Savior. It was a show of defiant strength that Trump, bloodied from the assassin’s bullets, returned to his feet. Out of the many photographs from this terrible event, the image of Trump surrounded by Secret Service agents holding his clenched fist over their heads, with the American flag in the background, drew a stark contrast between the two candidates for president—an injured Trump rising from danger and pushing forward with courage in the face of terror, versus President Biden’s unsuccessful solo press conference two days prior with a series of flubbed facts and names.

“People want a strong leader, and more people could come to favor him,” Mattera says.

Trump’s resilient strength could bring more independent voters to his side, while also inspiring some, both believers and nonbelievers, to the gospel.

3. Prophetic messages that do not point people to Jesus. Revelation 19 says the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. In the social media era, there is more enticement every day to reap financial rewards to be won feeding the appetites of content consumers. When it comes to prophetic words disseminated through the leading social media platforms, the temptations can be even greater.

In the aftermath of Trump’s shock win in the 2016 election, and then again following his loss in 2020, there were tidal waves of revisiting and criticisms of the huge number of prophecies about him, his candidacies and the elections. Many voices merely pivoted to speaking about the present-day news cycles instead of reconsidering their earlier words or offering any kind of mea culpa; some did, but they were the exception. The “social media prophets” continued giving messages that satisfied their followers.

If the message does not point people to Jesus, “I would say that does not fit the criteria of real biblical prophecy,” Mattera says.

The belief that God is protecting Donald Trump is deeply rooted in symbols, prophetic discourse and the interpretation of significant events. For many, Trump’s survival against the odds is not just a testament to his resilience but also a sign of a greater divine plan at work.
