Generational Giant-Slayers: Taking Up the Caleb Anointing

When you think about slaying giants, who is the first person that comes to your mind? Chances are, David has been placed on your giant-slaying pedestal. His encounter with Goliath is famous, and it stirs our hearts to read about a young boy taking down this Philistine bully with a slingshot and the anointing of God.

When we read this story, we see that God can anoint the unlikeliest of people to silence the enemy. However, another giant-slayer, Caleb, paved the way for David hundreds of years before, and this same anointing is important for us today as a new generation of spiritual giant-slayers is birthed from those who have pioneered the way for slaying the adversary. This message is vital for ministry as well as our personal lives.

The Caleb Anointing

Caleb was a giant-slayer in his spirit before he physically conquered any giants. In Numbers 13, we read the account of the twelve spies scouting out the Promised Land for 40 days. Moses gave them instruction to search out the land in verses 18-20, saying,

“And see what the land is, and the people that dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many; and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad, and what cities are that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in fortifications; and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood in it or not. And you be courageous and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.

These men were sent to gather information. They were not given jurisdiction to determine victory. God had already promised His people victory several times, indicating that He was giving them this land. Moses told these men to be of good courage and to return with fruit from the land.

Sometimes, God is telling us to go forth into areas ordained for us to go. He goes before us to make a way, and we have a choice to make in that pivotal moment. We have to decide if we are going to partner with God and be of good courage, or if we are going to partner with our flesh and the voice of the enemy.

Anointing, Glory and Everlasting Fruitfulness

The 12 spies were sent to confirm a good report of the Lord. They captured a vision of the land, and they brought back provision from the land. The grapes were substantial with a single cluster transported on a pole between two of the spies. They also returned with pomegranates and figs.

Each of these fruit holds a distinct meaning. Grapes represent the anointing. Pomegranates represent glory, majesty and righteousness, and figs represent everlasting fruitfulness. These men not only saw the land promised by the Lord, but they returned to their people with the anointing, the glory and everlasting fruitfulness. Yet a fraction of them received the promise. The majority could not get past the giants and their own perception as grasshoppers. Their rebellion cost a generation the promise.

The majority saw themselves as grasshoppers, but one man initiated the dream of being a giant-slayer. Our perception will determine our level of victory, and it can affect generations following us. The vision goes beyond us, and if it does not, then we have not adopted God’s dream and God’s vision.

Perception will deceive you into believing you have lost when you are already promised victory. We have His anointing and His glory, and we are to bear everlasting fruitfulness when we abide in the vine that is Christ. We are to pioneer the way for our children and those we spiritually parent to slay the giants and to take the land for God.

A Different Kind of Spirit

Caleb refused to bow to fear and intimidation. He believed God’s promise of the Promised Land. God said of Caleb:

But My servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit with him and followed Me fully, I will bring him into the land where he went, and his seed will possess it (Num. 14:24).

Caleb had a different spirit about him. He believed the giants were bread for his people and that their protection had ceased. He belonged to the tribe of Judah, the same tribe associated with King David. He pioneered the way for a young giant-slayer to rise up hundreds of years later to take a giant’s head from his shoulders.

Saints, we are called to have a different spirit about us, the Holy Spirit. We were not created by a God with a grasshopper complex. When you see through the eyes of fire, your perspective changes, and you begin to see that God is using you to steward a lineage of giant slayers and history makers.

We need to call this next generation forth as God sees them and not how we perceive them or what the world says about them. Mature leaders and wise parents will desire for the next generation to grab the torch, take up the mantle and run with the vision. They will cheer them on to go further into the land that they did not have time to conquer. Giant-slayers will always produce giant-slayers because they answer the call of God to only believe.

I encourage you today to be giant-slayers in the spirit and to mentor a generation. We need those with that Caleb anointing to walk in unwavering faith and demonstration of the Word of God for a David generation. Naysayers sow nothing but discord and death, but giant-slayers make history with God. Let’s band together and make history with God. {eoa}
