American men grew up idolizing James Bond for many reasons, including always “getting the girl.” I admit, I’m a fan of the Ian Fleming character and movies.
But this week, I want you to see that James Bond is an icon of infidelity. God’s man can learn something from Agent 007.
License to Kill Heart, Body and Soul
Bond, James Bond, had a “license to kill” in the line of duty, which was a license to thrill audiences for decades with action, adventure and romance. His license gave him access to travel the world and “entertain” women of all nationalities and backgrounds. This fantasy hero captures men, creating an unreal notion that men, and women, can slip between the sheets without causing any damage.
The truth is, if men use this license to thrill and seek unhealthy, sexual relationships outside of marriage, it is a license to kill the heart, body and soul of both the man and woman involved.
Premarital sex and sex outside of marriage break hearts, sabotage the purpose for our bodies and empty the soul of real meaning. Consider 1 Corinthians 6, starting in verse 9 that “… neither the sexually immoral … nor adulterers … will inherit the kingdom of God.” And in verses 13-15, “… the body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord and the Lord for the body … Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? … For it is said, ‘the two will become one flesh.’ But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.”
You might need a minute to let that Scripture sink in …
How Do You Avoid the License to Thrill?
Flee. Run.
Do like Joseph and make like the wind and blow out of there. Verses 18-20 says “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (Here’s the clincher) You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies” (my words and emphasis added).
This is amazing material, I’m sure Samson and David wish they could have known before they let the “thrill” get the best of them.
So, if you have sex outside or before marriage, you are sinning against yourself, God and damaging the woman you are sinning with. It’s one of the greatest tragedies. Yet God has made sex to be an amazing, beautiful union when honored according to His plan.
God’s Beautiful Plan for Your Sex Life
You know what women really want? Do you?
A righteous man. I call him “God’s man.” Women will throw themselves at you if you demonstrate self-control, respect and godly love for your body and hers. And once you have found “the one” to be your wife, you will see the beautiful plan God has for your sex life. It’s more amazing than anything you can imagine—a union between man, woman and God.
It takes maturity to handle this responsibility. Infidelity (contrary to the Hollywood depiction) is a sign of immaturity and of a man who does not have the character to meet the demands a committed relationship requires. The head scratcher in all of this is how women roll with it, are codependent with it, play into it, get hurt by it, endorse it and let themselves suffer it at every level.
The world culture loves to talk about PEACE and LOVE in terms of what it can do for the man or individual to self-preserve or self-protect. The Bible teaches that love is righteous and also faithful. Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit. Faithfulness is the sign of a man (God’s man especially) but lack of faithfulness is a sign of a boy.
Maybe his name should be James Boy, agent zero with a license to emptiness.
If you, or someone you know is struggling in the area of sexual purity, then find godly men to hang out with, confess your sin and seek God’s plan. There is a better way—God’s way.
