What Christians Need to Know About Florida’s Suspicious Recount in Broward County

Headlines have been buzzing lately with news about Florida’s recount for the governor and U.S. Senate races. It’s hard to ignore the drama surrounding the situation, especially with the suspicious behavior going on in Broward County.

Broward County’s Election Supervisor Brenda Snipes has been very controversial. Counting unlawful votes, violating Florida voting law, missing deadlines—it’s getting messy. Reports indicate she actually destroyed some ballots in a previous Democratic primary election, which makes you wonder why the county didn’t remove her then. News outlets are also reporting that Snipes didn’t allow Republican observers to look over the recount process. The worst part, though, is that they’ve been finding boxes of uncounted ballots. I find this suspicious because Florida requires that ballots be completely turned in 30 minutes after polls close. So why are we still discovering ballots a week afterward?

These recounts, though, should come as no surprise. Florida is famous for its recounts over the years, to the point that the state is frequently the punch line of jokes on talk shows and social media. Its most famous recount, though, was in the year 2000 during the presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. We didn’t know the outcome of that election until about a month after Election Day because Florida’s votes had to be recounted.

As annoying as some people find these recounts, I believe they’re important because every vote counts. My parents raised my siblings and me to always value our civic rights, so as soon as I was old enough, I registered to vote. I still take my 90-year-old mother to the polls for every election since she can’t drive herself.

To me, what matters most isn’t which political party you belong to; what’s important is that you honor God with your vote. After all, I was a Democrat for many years. That was back when the Democratic Party was more conservative than it is now. They were on the forefront for good causes like civil rights and hadn’t yet started pushing for anti-biblical values like abortion and gay rights.

That was during the time when I first met Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who ran against Gov. Rick Scott in this election. Nelson and I were both mentored by the late great Jamie Buckingham, one of the most respected voices in the charismatic community back in the day. The Nelsons and my family were the only two groups at Jamie’s funeral that weren’t related to him. I even endorsed Nelson several times in various elections.

This may surprise you, since I supported Scott in this election, but Nelson and I have been friends for many years, and I still respect him greatly. And yet over the years, the Democratic Party has grown more and more liberal. Now I see Democrats pushing for ungodly values and resisting conservative ideals, including religious liberty. And I was appalled at the brutal way Democrats treated Brett Kavanaugh during his hearing. I find it difficult to understand how sincere Christians can support the Democratic Party with the many ungodly agendas they stand for.

I truly believe God wants His people to be involved in politics. I believe He wants us to stand for Christian principles. And I believe our country needs to get back to our Judeo-Christian roots, which I think is really the essence of what Donald Trump means when he says he wants to make America great again. That requires going back to the basics, to the underlying principles that made America great in the past.

That’s part of the reason I wrote Trump Aftershock. I wanted to convey what God is doing in our nation and how He is using Trump to turn America around. The book’s premise is that if Trump’s election was an earthquake, his accomplishments since then are the aftershocks no one saw coming. The book released last week, so be sure to buy your own copy and download a free chapter at trumpaftershock.com.
